Stepparent adoptions steps (If the natural parent is willing to give up his/her rights):

Step 1:  Stepparent files petition with court to adopt stepchild.

Step 2:  Social worker writes a report.  In every adoption, a social worker writes a report.  This report gives important information to the judge about the adopting parent and the child.  The social worker will ask you questions.  You may have to fill out forms.  The social worker will file the report with the court and send you a copy. 

Step 3:  An adoption hearing date before the judge is made and the parties appear.  The adoption forms will be signed at the hearing.
